Turrialba Costa Rica

Turrialba Costa Rica is a bustling Tico town, it’s streets full of people.  The open air fruit and vegetable market sells some of the best quality fruit Costa Rica has to offer.  Though considered one of the Tico towns uncontrolled by tourism, Turrialba Costa Rica is quickly becoming the unofficial White-water capital of the nation. Turrialba Costa Rica boasts some of the most intriguing sites in the country.

White-water rafters and kayakers from around the world are learning about the rapids of Turrialba Costa Rica. Class III-V torrents are available on the Rio Pacuare and Rio Reventazon, two of the most famous white-water rivers in Central America. Lush stunning scenery, sunny floats, and challenging rapids are all available on expeditions beginning in Turrialba Costa Rica. Horseback riding tours are a more relaxed way to experience this scenic ambience and are offered in Turrialba Costa Rica.

4 km east of Turrialba Costa Rica is the Centro Agronomico Tropical de Investigacion y Ensenanza (CATIE).  This center is comprised of 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) dedicated to tropical agriculture research and education. A worthwhile activity in Turrialba Costa Rica is the guided tours of CATIE, which include extensive laboratories, greenhouses, a dairy, herbarium, and seed bank.  CATIE also houses the most vast library of tropical agricultural literature in the world.

19 km northeast of Turrialba Costa Rica in Monumento Nacional Argueologico Guayabo, the country’s largest and most important archaeological site. Excavations in this area unearthed highly developed infrastructure, including a sophisticated aqueduct system dating back to 800 AD.  Interested visitors can examine puzzling petroglyphs that are available for viewing. This location may date back to 1000 BC, and was mysteriously abandoned in 1400 AD. This is a fascinating place worth the drive from Turrialba Costa Rica.

Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba is an infrequently visited national park 15 km northwest of Turrialba Costa Rica (although winding roads make the actual distance much farther.) Volcan Turrialba, an active volcano, and Turrialba Costa Rica received their names from Spanish setters who called the volcano “Torre Alba” or white mountain.
